Villa vs. Hotel for a Group Trip
For groups of friends and families, a private villa often beats a hotel. Here's an honest look at when a villa makes sense, and when it doesn't.
5 min read
When a group of eight, twelve or twenty travels together, the choice between a villa and a hotel shapes the whole trip. Neither is always right. Here's how we'd think about it.
Where a villa wins
Time together
In a hotel, a group splits up. Rooms are on different floors; people drift off. In a villa, the terrace, pool and kitchen become shared spaces, and the trip becomes something you do together.
Space
A villa gives a group living rooms, gardens, a pool and a dining table big enough for everyone, all to themselves. That's hard to match in a hotel at any price.
Privacy
Celebrations, long dinners and late conversations are easier without other guests nearby.
Value
Divided between several families or couples, a villa can compare well with booking multiple high-end hotel rooms, especially once you account for the shared spaces you get.
Where a hotel might be better
- Very short stays of one or two nights.
- Groups who want a lot of on-site service and don't want to organize anything.
- Trips centered on a city, where you'll be out all day.
Even then, a staffed villa, with housekeeping, a chef and a house manager, can offer much of the service of a hotel with the privacy of a home.
What to look for in a group villa
- Bedrooms that feel equal, ideally with en-suite bathrooms.
- A table and terrace that seat the whole group.
- A pool large enough for everyone.
- Realistic distances to towns and restaurants.
- Clear rules on events if you're celebrating.
