Getting there
- Milan Malpensa (MXP) is typically around an hour or more by car. Milan Linate (LIN) and Bergamo (BGY) are alternatives.
- Trains run from Milan to Como and to Varenna.
- Ferries connect the lake's main towns, and a private boat is the most enjoyable way to get around.
For groups
- Very large lakefront villas are limited. Start early for groups of ten or more.
- Some villas are reached by steep lanes or stairs from the road.
- Having your own boat makes group logistics much easier.
Local tips
- Ask whether a villa's lake access is suitable for swimming.
- Roads around the lake are narrow and slow. Base yourself near where you'll spend most time.
- Book popular lakeside restaurants ahead, especially on weekends.
- Italy's other lakes, Garda and Maggiore, are worth considering too. Tell us if you're open to them.
